The terms

  1. 01

    Reading

The site is free to read. You may quote up to 200 words with a link and a credit. Republishing a whole piece, in print or elsewhere, needs written permission first.

  2. 02

    What writers keep

We buy first publication rights and a non-exclusive right to keep the piece in the archive. Copyright stays with the writer. After 60 days they may reprint anywhere, with a line noting it ran here first.

  3. 03

    Fiction is fiction

Every piece is labeled. Anything filed under Fiction or Serials is invented; names, towns and businesses in it are not real, and any resemblance to a real person is unintended.

  4. 04

    Subscriptions

Paid plans renew until cancelled, cancel in one click, and stop at the end of the period already paid for. We refund the current period on request, without asking why.

  5. 05

    Shop orders

Print runs are limited and made to order. Returns accepted within 30 days in the condition they arrived. If something turns up damaged, tell us and we replace it.

  6. 06

    Letters

Every story here is chosen, reported and written in-house; we do not accept pitches, submissions or outside work. You are welcome to write to us, but letters are read privately and are not published.

  7. 07

    Corrections and takedowns

We correct errors at the foot of the piece rather than quietly editing them out. We remove a story only when leaving it up would put someone at risk.

  8. 08

    The boring part

Otherwise Ordinary is published by Engage Brands and provided as-is. We are not liable for what you do with a recipe, a memory, or an argument you started at dinner.

Anything unclear here can be asked about on the contact page, or read alongside our privacy page.
